		<description>CREATIVE WELLINGTON TROPHY

This prototype trophy was designed and built for the 2003 “Absolutely Creatively Wellington Awards” - Interpreting aspects of creativity and ingenuity. The brief was to construct a trophy which reflected the creativity and ingenuity of the recipient and which could be manufactured locally.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/tumblr_lli610QaPX1qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="394" width_o="500" height_o="394" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/tumblr_lli610QaPX1qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7931883"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The design motivation of the trophy related to “ A revelation of hidden creativity”. Creative ability as an aspect of thought is often hidden or suppressed, a persons creative talent is sometimes never realized. The creative thought process is not tangible, it is hidden in a generic shell - the human body. To release it takes certain manipulations. The design of the trophy represents this.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/trophy 1 low.jpg" width="500" height="375" width_o="500" height_o="375" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/trophy 1 low_o.jpg" data-mid="19025487"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

I hand turned the body on the lathe from aluminum and sprayed it high gloss white, the trophy is weighty, cold and stark. There is no creative identity other than its form. The trophy then twists open (the manipulation) revealing the grain of the raw machined material and an intricate laser etched poem on a highly polished lens to read it.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/tumblr_lli5y3AIEo1qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="382" width_o="500" height_o="382" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1540120/tumblr_lli5y3AIEo1qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7931876"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The trophy relates back to Wellington city as the creative capital through the inscribed poetry of Wellington born author, Mark Pirie. The design achieved third prize in the Absolutely Creatively Wellington design competition.

		<description>PUBLIC TOILET CONCEPT

This public toilet design was part of a conceptual project for Methven tapware. The concept addresses the hygiene issues surrounding public toilets by combining the Eastern “squat” toilet with the Western style toilets we are used to in New Zealand.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1510550/tumblr_lledfhsnMw1qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="502" width_o="500" height_o="502" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1510550/tumblr_lledfhsnMw1qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7380054"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The form of the toilet is radically different, allowing the user to sit, while completely removing the toilet seat and the negative connotations surrounding it. “Through a radical change in the ergonomic understanding of how a toilet is used, a different social understanding of the toilet is gained”. The model in the image above was made using rapid prototyping and finished by hand.

		<description>URBAN LIGHTING CONCEPT - PRODUCT OUTCOME OF DESIGN THESIS

This urban lighting product was the physical outcome of my thesis which focused on an important contemporary issue surrounding Urban habitation; the paradox that surveillance is both needed and unwanted. We value security but demand our privacy

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511474/tumblr_lkzvj01F8i1qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="569" width_o="500" height_o="569" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511474/tumblr_lkzvj01F8i1qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7532084"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The project investigates the notion of ‘benevolent’ surveillance, creating an atmosphere of security but one that is non-invasive. The project deliberately addresses the most challenging of testing grounds - public spaces in the urban environment.

A series of light fittings creates a feeling of surveillance and safety by using visual cues to replicate the prescence of other people nearby. By day a two way mirror on the surface of the lamp housing alludes to the traditional convex security mirror - amplifying any movement in the environment while allowing the passerby to see themselves and others.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511474/tumblr_lkztfy3Fx61qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="395" width_o="500" height_o="395" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511474/tumblr_lkztfy3Fx61qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7532081"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
By night, the spotlight concealed behind the mirror shines through. It remains static until the presence of a passerby is sensed and - using existing technology - the spotlight is triggered to move as if surveying, observing and presiding over the space but without recording information.

The theoretical approach to this project allowed the methodology to be expansive in scope ranging from voyueristic video recordings to physical testing of light qualities. Psychological experiments to full scale in-situ test rigs. The design was also fully specified by lighting and structural engineers.

The lamps were awarded a Red Dot concept award 2006.

		<description>PHILIPS REMOTE CONTROLS

This Remote Control Family from 2008 is based on one design identity with clearly defined visual and tactile qualities. Careful consideration has been given to the balance, feel and form. The design intuitively focuses the user’s attention towards the navigation, converging hardware with software. Winner of iF Award 2008.

		<description>PHILIPS SOUNDBAR

HTS6120 - With DVD Playback 2008: One of the earlier projects I worked on at Philips Design. The second generation of Philips original Ambisound Soundbar. The design utilized the ‘flare’ design identity to match perfectly with a wall-mounted Philips television. Like the previous generation it had a smooth mechanical glass door which slides back automatically to reveal the vertically mounted DVD.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511455/tumblr_lle7c9X2pg1qzha5t (1).jpg" width="500" height="332" width_o="500" height_o="332" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511455/tumblr_lle7c9X2pg1qzha5t (1)_o.jpg" data-mid="7531374"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

CSS5123 - TV Bar 2011: This soundbar is the first designed to harmonize with the ever increasing Android ecosystem. The aerofoil design enhances the very thin form factor of the bar and the extruded aluminium finishing matches the build quality and finishing of the new generation of LED televisions. A clever innovation in the design allows the bar to sit flat in front of the TV and use dolby virtual surround to produce an immersive soundstage. If the user has more space they can flip out the built in stand to have the speaker facing directly at them for even better sound performance.

		<description>X-HALO EXHALED BREATH THERMOMETER

X-halo is a revolutionary new tool that assists in the fight against asthma, its a reusable hand-held device which measures fluctuation in lung temperature allowing asthmatics to predict if an attack is imminent. The aesthetic character and emotional appeal are appropriate for a patient-used, hand-held device. The form is elegantly straightforward, non-threatening and sturdy, combining confidence-building technical authority with just enough playfulness (many asthma patients are young children.)

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511450/tumblr_ll17icxWdy1qzha5t (1).jpg" width="500" height="667" width_o="500" height_o="667" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511450/tumblr_ll17icxWdy1qzha5t (1)_o.jpg" data-mid="7504542"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The research and design for X-halo carried out at Philips Design in Singapore led to superior quality of technical innovation based on solid and substantial front-end design research. Resulting in an elegant user interface, well-conceived interaction design based on human factors and excellent use of multi modal cues to inform the user experience. Usage is made intuitive by colour-shifting LED lighting combined with audible sounds to indicate when to start and finish blowing.

My role in this project was as product design lead. X-halo was awarded with the iF product design award 2009 and also won merit at the Singapore Design awards 2009 as well as Design of the Year at the prestigious Presidents Design Award 2009 of Singapore.

		<description>PHONE CONCEPT

This conceptual project was an investigation into fluid form. Designed as a luxury household item this cordless phone intends to resemble a piece of contemporary jewellery while retaining its visual links to the traditional handset as a precedent.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511425/tumblr_lkzseiD21n1qzha5t.jpg" width="500" height="500" width_o="500" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/116174/1511425/tumblr_lkzseiD21n1qzha5t_o.jpg" data-mid="7505026"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The resulting form is futuristic while retaining a sense of nostalgia in its function. Its transparent surface reveals the inherent beauty of the technology within and reminds the user of the link to the intangible virtual information world.

The phone has no display, the only buttons are the basic numeric keys running down the spine. All other functions are voice activated. Handwritten or printed text can also be scanned and sent.

I cast the final model in resin from a silicone mould, the internal components were imbedded in the mould.
